Blues Highways in the United States: 66, 61, 49 and 67.
|

Blues Highway 49 begins at Gulfport, Mississippi, which is 20 miles W/O Alabama, 20 miles E/O of Louisiana, and about 50 miles from New Orleans. Gulfport, Mississippi is a true delta city, which is on the Gulf of Mexico, in the most southern part of the United States. For those of you that have never had a plate full of Turnip Greens, Black Eyed Peas and Cornbread, here we go: Traveling north, the first big town is Hattiesburg, MS, but north of that is Mississippi’s main major city; Jackson, Mississippi home to some of the worlds best, and most famous Gospel groups, and Gospel and blues radio programming too. North of Jackson, is Yazoo City, a much worn out blues word. Highway 49 splits at Yazoo with 49w heading northwest, and 49 northward. They join again at the crossroads of Hwy 49 and Hwy 3 in the middle of nothing but cotton fields as far as you can see. The closet small towns are Rome and Dublin miles away. After passing the crossroads, you will enter Clarksdale, Mississippi, which lays claim to be the epic-center for blues worldwide. So be it. Leaving Clarksdale you are on joint Highway 49 and 61, and they split in ten miles with the closest little berg being Rich, Mississippi. Highway 61 continues north, crosses the Mississippi State line into, Memphis, Tennessee. I was in one of the worst thunderstorms of my life on this stretch of highway back in 1996. Highway 49 turns west and crosses the Mississippi River, into Helena, Arkansas. This is home to the King Biscuit; KFFA historic Sonny Boy Williamson blues radio show. We are still in fertile cotton, and farming country. We didn’t really call it delta when I was a kid, but referred to it as bottom-land or river bottom. Traveling north, you pass West Memphis, Arkansas by about 20 miles, and head into Jonesboro, Arkansas. My daddy was born in house along side Highway 49 back in 1913, and he was raised on a cotton farm between Jonesboro, and Paragould, Arkansas. From here if you stay north on 49, you will cross Arkansas into Missouri around Moark, Arkansas. 49 and 67 are joint highways in Missouri for a few miles. 49 will branch off around Williamsville, Missouri, and Highway 49 will continue to the north, and finally end at the historic Route 66 in Cuba, Missouri, which is now Interstate 44. Highway 67 continues northeast and eventually joins Interstate 55, just south of St. Louis, Missouri, which is some odd 200 plus miles southwest, away from Chicago. For those of you that got some interest out of America’s Blues Highways, there is a MapQuest Reference below for you. America’s music Highways are Route 66, Highway 49 & 61. Although the Interstate system has fragmented the old Highway system, many parts of these old blues roads are still there, where Southern and Union Pacific Railroads crisscross them continuously. I’ll talk about blues trains in a future article. Now you know the rest of the story about blues highways in America. These are my bestest, goodest blues guitar friends, and we go together like peas and
carrots. Besides Johnny, we met on MySpace Music, and then started joining in
Tornado Valley Radio in the evenings where DJ Brad would spin our blues CD's. Mark
has his own Blues Nation radio show too. We all got into sharing and promoting each
other. Now this is unusual, as most blues lead guitar players these days get a long
like two blonde's wearing the same dress at a party. Not here, each one shares the
hog, and shows deep mutual respect toward one another. I am just glad these young
hot guns let the old senior blues cat here hang with them. They've taken me in as the
old school blues guitar mascot. I can't brag enough about these five guys, as each
one can smoke it brother. If you think this old man is feeding you a line, go on over
to their sites and check out some hot blues guitar work. One of the other things we
have in common is guitar talk. Most folks wouldn't have a clue to what we chatter
about, as we dive deep off into guitars, pick ups, amps and blues legends so far it is
mind boggling to the average human. I finally found folks that understand my guitar
gibberish. Here my family thought all these years I was having wired flashbacks to the
sixties I lived through in the California flower power days. Strangely I went around
with saliva drooling out the corner or my mouth mumbling crap about guitars and
blues. Finally, someone understands me. This is our blues guitar gang, and go on
over to their sites. Tell them the senior blues cat Mike sent you.
The Hook. I met Hook Herrera back in 1985. I had a guitar shop in El Cajon, CA, then. Hook heard from blues harp legend Ken Schoppmeyer, that I had a very ancient, Tweed, Fender Bassman for sell. The amp was very ragged out with road mange, and someone painted it green with army paint. However, having a collection of old Fender amps back then, I didn't want it, and was up for sale. Hook Herrera, came in with a buddy and said he heard about the amp. He played it, and went nuts over the real deal, antiquated blues harp notes just humming out of them old blue Jensen's. He bought the amp, and we became friends. Later Hook, and I would sit in together with Ken and his King Biscuit band at the former San Diego, CA blues landmark, The Mandolin Wind. "The Wind" Hook can sing, blow some tough harp and play guitar too. I always loved jamming with him, as their is always mutual respect. Years and miles later we found each other again on MySpace Music, and I just have to tell everyone about another great American blues musician, like many, standing in the shadows jamming them blues in obscurity for decades. Check his sites out, and tell him Mike, Blues Guitar sent you.

Hairy Larry and I have been blues buddies for
a few years. Before I moved back to the blues
motherland here in Arkansas, and I was still in
California, Hairy kept me listed on his Delta
Boogie web site. Now, this is real life true
blues from the heartland, as Hairy still lives in
the middle of Cotton Farms, on historic Blues
Highway 49. He is a true, authentic American
bluesman. He has kept his Delta Boogie web
site running for a decade and a half, as mostly a
labor of love for the blues. I was honored to be
invited to play at their Blues Festival this year,
so I just had to tell you all to visit his great blues
site. Now pack a lunch, and sit a spell, as you
will be entering a true blues wonderland with
more blues information than you will find on any
other ten sites. Gotta' love this man, and heck
he and I are probably cousins, it's an Arkansas
thing, as he lives right down Highway 49, a
couple miles from where my daddy was born
and raised on a cotton farm. Check it out.

Delta Boogie is the grand daddy of
blues radio sites. Delta Blues Radio,
Band Listings, Blues CD Reviews,
Blues Festivals, Blues Networking,
Blues Videos, Blues Artists, Blues
Guitar Forums, Blues Information,
Blues Links, Blues History, Blues
Journalizing and the list goes on.
Pack a lunch for this site brother.
I met Henry, on Yahoo 360, which
I rarely use. He wanted to join as
blues friends, and I asked him to
get on over to MySpace Music.
He did, and is building one great
blues info site now. He has the
blues guitar gang on his front
page, and is blues networking
like cazy. You all go on over, and
meet this true blues friend, and
tell him Mike sent you.

Queen of the Stratocaster ZANNE
|
As quoted from the San Francisco
Art Magazine, Jesai writes “For
lovers of New Orleans style R&B,
newcomer Zanne Mack is just the
ticket…her cd is full of a hot down
and dirty delta feel. Mack's vocal
style is that raw, from the soul blues
style that has been used with great
success by such greats as Janis
Joplin and Etta James…Her solo
slide guitar work and story songs
evoke visions of life in old timey
cabins on the bayou.

Like many of the thousands of blues
friends I've met in cyber space over
the years, Zanne and I buddied up
and chatted here and there. One
day I saw she had me in her top
friends at MySpace, and thought it
was cool she added the senior blues
cat to her top blues friends. So,
today I finally wrapped up a few busy
blues chores, and sat down to listen
to all I could find by Zanne. Hold on
to your hat brother, as this first lady of
the blues Stratocaster can smoke
that thing. A wide range of true down
home blues, R&B and Funk in her
arsenal, she is the real deal. Now
this is a lady I would love to be in a
jam session with someday, as I can
tell by her feel, she loves her guitar.
Too many folks are in love with their
self these days, instead of the music.
Not here with this lady, go on over
and listen to some fine blues, and
R&B. In fact buy her CD, and listen to
it all. You too will see how she loves
her guitar, and the music. Nice old
Strat too.
