Blues Hall of Fame Ambassador - Arkansas
Hey y'all, I hope this finds everyone happy,
healthy and wealthy for your upcoming summer.
Winter is over, and the gigs are rolling in making
it tough to spend time with friends in MySpace,
email and messaging.
Our readership has really grown by leaps and
bounds in the last year, and all due to the
thousands of new blues friends we meet
everyday on a global perspective.   If this is your
first time, don't judge a book by looking at it's
cover.  This isn't your run of the mill blues outlet.
We are into shouting out about folks on all
levels of blues, and don't try to appear bigger
than life.  Down to earth, just like the music we
love.  Too many folks are peddling blues these
days, but ignore the working musician.  They
carry over a pop rock attitude of named artists
sell, and working musicians are own their own
fighting for scraps of recognition.   We always like
to list a lot of our new blues friends from
MySpace, especially the ones that left a cool
comment.
Spring was a busy month, as the band had it's
CD release party, and it was a great success with
radio air play and a local TV spot.  Then, we were
asked to play at the 24th annual Arkansas River
Blues Society celebration at Juanita's.  Then to
top that off, my old band mate from California,
Len Rainey, called up and said he would be in
Little Rock, AR on his way back from a Chicago
Blues show.  So, we cooked up an evening with
Len, and the Joe Pitts Band at Studio Joe's.
They're letting the old man here come along to
roadie, and play a little guitar too.
We would like to welcome three new companies
advertising with us this month: Steel String Blues,
an on line storehouse of blues blues concert art
memorabilia, CD's, DVD's, and more.  Geezer
Sound Company is a custom speaker enclosure
manufacture.  You can order off the shelf killer
speaker cabs loaded with your choice of
speakers.
The photo of the trumpet player is Donald Byrd.
I was talking with a blues mate, and was listing
musicians and songs I personally listen to.  The
first time ever I heard "Christo Redentor" by the
genius of Donald Byrd back in the 60's, I soared
into a spiritual plateau no other musician besides
Mahalia Jackson, can take me.   If you listen to
this whole piece all the way through, you should
have tears in your eyes at the end, or your ain't
got a soul.
Most of us old timers that are knee deep into
the blues most often have a wide variety of music
we listen to.  I formed the opinion years ago there
are two types of music, good and not so good.   I
was at our favorite local Wild Oats yuppie food
store one Saturday, and heard an acoustic guitar
and fiddle player ripping Stephane Grappelli and
Django Reinhardt "Hot Club" songs.  I was deeply
taken by their sound, sat down and listened while
I waited for Jo Ann to come out from shopping.  If
you haven't heard "Hot Club" it is 40's mix of jazz,
bop and blues.   Fast paced, and rapid melody
lines with a bouncy rhythm.  You can check out
the Bill Thurman music at:
www.billthurmanmusic.com
Many old timers living in the south like me had a
Baptist hymnal beginning, and our first exposure
to 12 bar blues in the early 50's pre-rock & roll,
was Hank Williams who is the Jimi Hendrix of the
late 40's.  I still listen to Hank Senior from time to
time, and it is amazing how many blues bands
these days have a number or two of Hank's tunes
in their repertoire.   He is a Louisiana man, grew
up on the Bayou and was yodeling blues from
birth forward.    Move it on over.
Below our featured article is by Blues Boy Jag
on cigar box guitars.  Check this out, as this is a
rapid growing society of enthusiasts into this new
musical art form.
That's it for this month, God bless and keep on
jammin' them blues. Keep your tubes burnin' and
your speakers pumping.   Mike
One man's trash is another man's treasure"

Bluesboy Jag, a computer technician from North Little
Rock Arkansas has taken the age old art of musical
instrument building one step further by using discarded
cigar boxes to make electric guitars. Cigar box guitars
were quite popular from the late 1800’s all the way up
through the 1930’s when store bought guitars became
affordable for even the most down on their luck
musician. Jag says that the recent resurgence of
interest in these instruments has spurred a new interest
in blues music: “Because the popular music of the day
was jug band and blues music, people tend to play that
kind of music on cigar box guitars. They are generally
tuned the same way a banjo is tuned – to an open chord
which also lends itself to blues style playing although
you can play any kind of music on these”.

Jag uses discarded cigar boxes, cookie tins, and even
makes amplifiers out of the rectangular cigar boxes. All
of his creations are electrified which means you can run
them through a regular guitar amplifier. Jag winds his
own pickups which he says is a very tedious and time
consuming process. “It takes several hours to hand wind
a pickup, especially one for a cigar box guitar but they
sound awesome, way better than a transducer pickup
which tends to be tinny and does not’t sound good when
it’s cranked up. I have yet to find someone who can tell
the difference between a store bought $1000 guitar and
my cigar box guitar when listening with their eyes
closed. These things look really cool and they sound
fantastic.”

Some of Jag’s favorite creations are his ‘hamdolin’, a
ukulele made out of an oval shaped ham tin; Boogie
Board foot stompers, suitcase bass drums, three string
basses and one of a kind vintage radios converted to
amplifiers. Jag plays his creations at local clubs, coffee
houses and blues festivals across the country.

powerful voice, its no wonder she's such a favourite with
all her come across her.
As a recording artist, Roxy has performed, produced and
written the material for three highly acclaimed CDs that

Mick Rutherford-Lived a Dream-Click Here!

You know, from as early as I can remember, I have been absorbed by music, my
induction to it and the measurement I set everything by, was the 1960's! It was a decade
that we are likely never to see the likes again. Musically it changed everything that went
before it in to a "Well anything goes culture"

I had a very lucky childhood. My Cousin roadies for The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann
and some of the most influential bands of then & now! I was lucky to be in the thick of and
the cutting edge of the Music that changed the world.

My memories are as precious as the Crown Jewels themselves. But I often regret not
being born 10 years earlier and to have been able to be in the thick of things as a
musician around Britain. The Cavern, The Marquee, The Flamingo Club, Eel Pie Island
etc. These, for those that don't know. Is where the British scene came of age and its
music shook the world.

I have met, most of which I have written about on these blogs, some wonderful musicians
and people who inspire me. And this man is one of  them!   Mich Rutherford has walked
with, played with and enjoyed the company of some of the most influential musicians of
out time. From falling asleep behind Jimi Hendrix's amp to sharing time with Rod Stewart.
And when a man has walked with the very people you hold up so highly, makes him
special too.

As anyone who has played alongside Blues Legends such as Alexis Corner, you have to
be something special!

And for the Cavern Club to award a man "Bricks" of it structure as token of its gratitude to
his services to the Club, which you don't need me to tell you spawned 4 very famous
young Liverpudlians, its an honour of the highest order. As the photograph at the top
shows Mick in Action. And how many people have stood and played where Paul
McCartney played only a short time prior? Not many.

So for me, Mick has lived and is living my very dream. But, the thing that makes him more
special, is the fact he is a wonderfully caring, kind and inspiring man. Or I wouldn't be
writing this. People who blow smoke up their own arse have no substance as far as I am
concerned. But Mick has everything you would want a "True Music Trooper" to have!

I cannot speak highly enough of him. He most probably wont like this kind of attention.
Well, I will take that chance. At my Blues Club, Mick, myself and Michelle and several
others have been posting, talking about and enjoying memories via some great clips of
artists that inspired us. And its been emotional re living some of the tracks that I grew up
to, Mick witnessed 1st hand. And trust me, I know my musical history, and Mick lived the
very times Ive studied so much.!

You have only got to listen to Mick, both musically and his recall to know, he is the real
deal. And a lovely man with it.

So, if you want a great friend, great music and a great insight. Then look no further than
Mick Rutherford!

Have a great weekend.   God Bless

Blues Talent

From the ARBS President: Babs Bearden:
The Arkansas River Blues Society (ARBS) will hold a Blues Competition
Weekend on August 22 and 23, 2008 at the Cornerstone Pub in North
Little Rock.  Blues bands and solo/duo blues acts will compete for prizes and
ARBS sponsorship to The Blues Foundation's 2009 International Blues
Challenge (IBC) held in Memphis, TN February 4 – 7, 2009.
The International Blues Challenge (IBC) can no longer be considered a
purely "amateur" contest.  It represents an international search by The
Blues Foundation and its affiliated organizations for the Blues band
and Blues solo/duo most deserving of taking their act to the International
stage.  In 2008, over 90 bands and 60 solo/duo acts from 34 states and
8 countries competed, making the IBC the largest gathering of Blues acts
in the world.

The ARBS event will be a two day event.  Competition will begin on
Friday night (August 22, 2008) and end on Saturday night (August 23, 2008).
The IBC rules will be followed strictly. The first place winner in each of
the two categories will receive ARBS sponsorship to the International Blues Challenge in
Memphis in February 2009, where they can gain valuable exposure to record label A & R
representatives, Blues industry professionals, and festival promoters capable of providing
real career advancement for a serious blues
musician.  The second and third place winners in each category will receive
prizes, as well.  The rest of us will be winners, as well, since we will get to enjoy some great
blues entertainment at the competition.

Winners at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, the city
considered by many to be the home of the Blues and the birthplace of
Rock n Roll, receive cash and prizes such as professional consultations and
assistance, gigs at some of the country's best festivals, interviews in
the world's leading Blues publications, free website design and
hosting, an even a slot on the "2009 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise."
Applications for entry are available by contacting Deb Moser and
deb@blueshouseparty.com.  The entry fees are $40 for a band and $20 for a solo/duo.
All entry packets must be postmarked by July 2, 2008.
